How To Grow Yarrow From Seeds

Yarrow, also known as Achillea millefolium, is a beautiful flowering plant that can be grown from seed. In this blog post, we will explore the process of growing yarrow from seed and provide you with some helpful tips to ensure success.

Why grow yarrow from seed?

Growing yarrow from seed is a cost-effective way to add this stunning plant to your garden. It allows you to have control over the entire growing process and ensures that you are starting with healthy, disease-free plants. Additionally, growing yarrow from seed opens up a world of possibilities, as there are many different varieties and colors to choose from.

Getting started

To begin growing yarrow from seed, you will need the following:

  • Yarrow seeds
  • Seed starting mix
  • Seed trays or pots
  • Plastic wrap or a seed starting dome
  • Grow lights or a sunny windowsill
  • Watering can or spray bottle

Start Achillea seeds indoors 6 - 8 weeks before the last frost. Use a starting mix and trays or small pots. Start by filling your seed trays or pots with seed starting mix. Moisten the mix with water, making sure it is evenly damp but not soaking wet. Sprinkle the yarrow seeds on top of the mix, spacing them about an inch apart. Lightly press the seeds into the soil, but do not cover them as they need light to germinate. Light helps germination. Keep the soil moist, but not soaked during germination.

You can also start seed outdoors after the danger of frost has passed and is warm enough; the night time temperatures staying in the upper 40's or warmer.

Germination and care

Yarrow seeds typically germinate within 7 to 14 days. During this time, it is important to keep the soil consistently moist. You can mist the soil with a spray bottle or water from the bottom by placing the trays in a shallow tray of water. Cover the trays with plastic wrap or a seed starting dome to create a greenhouse-like environment and retain moisture.

Once the seeds have germinated, remove the plastic wrap or dome and place the trays under grow lights or in a sunny windowsill. Yarrow plants require at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day to thrive. If using grow lights, position them about 6 inches above the seedlings and keep them on for 14 to 16 hours a day.

Transplanting and maintenance

When the yarrow seedlings have grown their second set of true leaves, they are ready to be transplanted into individual pots or into your garden. Choose a location that receives full sun and has well-draining soil. Dig a hole slightly larger than the root ball of the seedling and gently place it in the hole. Backfill with soil and water thoroughly.

Yarrow plants are relatively low maintenance once established. Water them regularly, especially during dry spells, but be careful not to overwater as they prefer slightly dry conditions. Deadhead the flowers to encourage continuous blooming and remove any yellow or diseased leaves.

In conclusion

Growing yarrow from seed is a rewarding experience that allows you to enjoy the beauty of this versatile plant. By following the steps outlined in this blog post, you can successfully grow yarrow from seed and create a stunning addition to your garden.
