1. Planting Outdoors

Direct sow is recommended, in the area you want them to grow - from late May until the beginning of August for blooming in the second year.

Choose a sunny or partial shade place and remove the weeds.

Rake the soil to a fine tilth so that it's fine and easy breakable. The seed can be sown in drills 5mm deep and 12 inches (30cm) apart.

Water the soil before sowing and allow the drill to drain. Scatter the seed in thinly along the drill and cover up with soil. As they grow, if the plants are crowded, thin them out to 6 inches (15cm) apart.

Water well Dianthus - Sweet William during the hot, dry weather. Keep the soil moist to slightly dry.

2. Planting Indoors

Start seed indoors 6-8 weeks before the potential last frost in your area for transplanting later. Young seedlings will transplant well into their home area for spring blooming.

Scatter Sweet William Mix seeds over the starting mix and press them lightly into the growing medium.

Transplant into cell packs or small 3-4" containers, 20-25 days after sowing.

Harden off before transplanting outdoors, 6-8 weeks after sowing.

Cool temperatures of 50-55°F (10-13°C) will keep the plants low growing and basal branching. Avoid constant warm temperatures of 65°F (18°C), especially at night, which will produce soft growth.
